A beautiful listing can compress uncertainty into three words: “complete antique Bakelite.” Treat each word as a separate claim requiring evidence.
Decide what success means
Are you buying to play, collect a documented maker, preserve family-era design, study materials, or decorate a room? A set can be right for one purpose and wrong for another. Write your priority and maximum total cost before negotiating.
Ask for evidence, not reassurance
Request:
- one photograph showing every tile face in countable groups;
- representative backs, edges, seams, and dimensions;
- close-ups of marks, labels, papers, damage, repairs, and mismatches;
- the exact count of tiles and accessories;
- direct descriptions of odor, stickiness, warping, cracks, and loose laminations;
- the basis for material, maker, age, and provenance claims.
“I was told” is provenance information, but it is not material identification. “Looks complete” is not a count.
Read omissions as unknowns
Poor photographs do not prove a defect; they mean the condition is unresolved. If a seller cannot or will not supply basic evidence, price the uncertainty or walk away. Never ask a seller to perform a hot-pin, flame, solvent, or scratch test.
Check the transaction
Read the platform’s current return and buyer-protection terms before purchase. Save the listing, photographs, messages, receipt, and stated condition. Confirm who bears return shipping and how damage in transit is handled. These policies change, so rely on the platform’s own current language.
Plan for shipping
Tiles should not move freely inside a case. The case itself should not be treated as the shipping box. Ask for internal padding that does not place adhesive on historic surfaces, protection from moisture, and outer cushioning appropriate to the weight. Consider insurance and signature requirements for a high-cost purchase.
Compare the whole cost
Include shipping, taxes, replacement tiles, conservation consultation, case stabilization, and the chance that an attribution remains unconfirmed. Compare completed sales in the relevant market, not only active listings.
If the set arrives misdescribed
Pause cleaning, repair, play, and replacement purchases. Photograph the unopened package, unpacking sequence, counts, and discrepancy. Preserve the listing and messages, then contact the seller or platform within its stated window. Describe the evidence precisely rather than escalating the language.
Walking away is a successful research outcome when the evidence, condition, or terms do not support the purchase.
